Education for Citizenship

This might seem an entirely laudable goal, but the approach to education for citizenship currently on offer raises a number of important questions.

Promoting Active Citizenship and Social Inclusion in Civil Society at Work
Professor Gus John, University of Strathclyde, UK

On the face of it, there is not one thing in the Green Paper (THE LEARNING AGE - A RENAISSANCE FOR A NEW BRITAIN) with which most responsible citizens could be expected to have major disagreements. For this responsible citizen, however, far too many taken-for-granted assumptions are made, too many questions begged and there is a fundamental flaw in the approach the Green Paper takes.

Education experts believe black children will be disproportionately targeted by drug testing in schools.

Teachers will be given powers to select which children they wish to single out for drug testing in the new policy announced recently by Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Black education experts are comparing the drug testing policy with exclusion figures showing African-Caribbean boys four times more likely to be expelled from school than their white counterparts.
